Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Simon Foster has hailed West Midlands Police’s Operation Hercules team after they received national recognition for their ground-breaking work to tackle illegal street racing across the region.
Operation Hercules officers scooped a prestigious national award for innovation and excellence at the National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) Roads Policing Conference in Manchester for their pioneering approach, which includes a variety of strategies, tactics and the enforcement of a High Court injunction against street racing.
PCC Simon Foster, who has joined the team out on patrol to witness their work first-hand, praised their dedication to combating the dangerous driving that puts lives at risk. The Commissioner contributed £40,000 towards the launch of Operation Hercules, to fund awareness, education and prevention.

Commenting on the award and the team’s success, West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, Simon Foster, said: “Preventing and tackling crime and anti-social behaviour on our roads, is a top priority for me. Operation Hercules, that targets illegal street racing, is a powerful example of partnership in action – protecting our communities, saving lives and holding thoughtless and reckless drivers to account.
“I have seen first-hand, the commitment, dedication and professionalism of the Op Hercules team, and this national recognition of their commendable achievements, is richly and rightly deserved.”
Road safety is an absolute priority for the Police and Crime Commissioner, a commitment reinforced in his Police and Crime Plan 2025-2029. The PCC is a strong advocate for Vision Zero by 2040, the long-term goal to eradicate all road deaths and serious injuries in the West Midlands region.
