Reason for Authority (Brief Summary for Publication)
#POWERS | We will be using section 60 powers in Birmingham city centre today (Fri) following disorder involving fireworks. Section 60 powers allow us to stop and search people without the need to have reasonable grounds. The powers will be in place from 3pm today until 6am tomorrow morning and will cover the area of Birmingham highlighted on the map. The Section 60 has been put in place following incidents of disorder involving fireworks in the New Street area, Dale End area and Staniforth Street. Groups have launched fireworks in the street and from buildings, with some aiming towards police officers and police vehicles. We charged 19 people with a range of offences such as assaulting police and public order following disorder on Wednesday evening. We won’t tolerate such appalling behaviour which we know is frightening for people and puts them at risk of harm. The safety of our communities is paramount and we’ll do all we can to ensure this.
