The West Midlands Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Waheed Saleem is holding a Hate Crime Symposium.

This symposium invites voluntary and community sector providers in the West Midlands working directly with victims of hate crime.

The aim of this symposium is to coordinate a community response to supporting victims of this crime allowing providers to share their expertise on models that could work to support various groups affected by hate crime.

The event will be held virtually on 10th June 2020 from 11am-12:30pm

Prior to the event attendees will be asked to provide information to a series of questions aimed at understanding regional hate crime issues. They will include:

  • Assessment of hate crime incidents reported and unreported to the police
  • Description of reporting mechanisms
  • Current service provision across the region
  • Funding arrangements
  • Gaps in service
  • Emerging trends
  • Models for support services for victims

The information collected on the day from service providers will enable informed commissioning responses and improved working with West Midlands Police and other statutory bodies supporting victims.

Like other projects, the Deputy PCC has encouraged organisations currently delivering support to victims of hate crime in Birmingham to adapt their services to meet the needs of victims.

Following the symposium, the Deputy PCC will consider proposals for regional delivery models appropriate to the needs of victims affected by hate crime.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Waheed Saleem said: “West Midlands Police will not tolerate hate crimes and I would encourage anyone who has been a victim to report it.

“The purpose of this event to bring providers together to review our current approach to tackling hate crime and identify how we can improve our response.

“The PCC has considered many different ways of improving outcomes and partnerships including launching the innovative West Midlands Victim’s Commission”.
