West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson is recruiting two Assistant PCCs and reappointing six non-executive members to his Strategic Policing and Crime Board (SPCB).
All of the posts will help the Commissioner in his day-to-day work, namely driving down crime for the 2.74 million residents of the West Midlands and holding West Midlands Police to account.
Two new Assistant PCCs – instead of a single Deputy PCC – will work closely with the Commissioner to help him to achieve his aims of reducing crime, recruiting more police officers, further protection of the PCSOs and introducing more modern and effective ways of working within West Midlands Police. They will be expected to deliver the highest standards of public life. Their combined allowances will be no more than the previous Deputy PCC post’s salary.
The SPCB, meanwhile, plays a vital role in the helping the PCC publicly hold Chief Constable Dave Thompson to account. Recent issues the board has scrutinised include delays on the region’s motorways, the force’s use of Stop and Search and waiting times for background checks.
West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner David Jamieson said today: “I want to see as many people as possible from across the West Midlands apply for these vital positions. I want the board to reflect the people and communities it serves.
“I also want to see young people put themselves forward for these roles: the West Midlands is one of the youngest regions in Europe and I am keen for my office to reflect this and represent younger citizens.
“West Midlands Police is one of the largest forces in the country – with a budget of more than £540 million and thousands of staff – and it needs capable, public-spirited people to hold it to account.
“The two new assistants and six non-executive board members will be able to make a real difference in the West Midlands and I see this as a great opportunity to change things for the better.”
All of the new roles will be offered as contracts on a 12-month basis with the potential for annual renewal.
