A new weapon surrender bin has been unveiled in Sutton Coldfield, as PCC Simon Foster steps up his continuing crackdown on knife crime.
Simon Foster, decided to install the new safe and secure box in Sutton Coldfield, after consultation with people in the area and the Local Policing team.
It brings the total number of PCC installed bins to 26 across our region. In just a period of 6 months last year, about 2,000 dangerous weapons, including, knives, guns and machetes were placed in the weapons surrender bins, ensuring that there are fewer weapons out on the streets of the West Midlands, capable of causing harm.
The bin has been placed in Lower Parade, Sutton Coldfield and all items deposited will be safely disposed of.
The roll out of the bins is part of concerted action by the PCC, to prevent, tackle and reduce violence across the West Midlands.
Thousands of knives have already been placed into the existing bins, with each weapon deposited potentially saving a life.
West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner Simon Foster said: “Another weapon surrender bin being installed, is another step towards taking knives off our streets.
“The bins are providing people with a legal and safe way to dispose of knives, which they shouldn’t be carrying. Every knife placed in a surrender bin is potentially a life saved.
“The weapon surrender bins are part of a much wider strategy to prevent, tackle and reduce knife crime in the West Midlands. In addition to robust policing, the Violence Reduction Partnership, set up in 2019, is at the forefront of this work.
“I am committed to constant and unremitting action to prevent, tackle and reduce violence, protect people and save lives.”
