At the monthly Strategic Policing and Crime Board meeting with West Midlands Police Commanders this morning (Tuesday 3 November), Deputy Commissioner Yvonne Mosquito has called for ‘the community to join her in sending a clear message that carrying a gun is not acceptable, and crucially it puts you in more danger not less.’
Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Yvonne Mosquito said,
“Recent shootings and violent incidents that have taken place in the West Midlands are of course worrying and a cause for concern. I understand the anxiety that some in the community may be feeling around these incidents, but I would like to reassure the public that the police are doing all they can to bring the perpetrators to justice and extra patrols will be taking place in the affected areas. The police are working hard to get weapons off our streets and intercept them before they enter the area and country.
“These deaths are a tragic reminder that violent crime still blights many of our communities and the work we all have to do. We will be working with the police to protect the public and I urge the community to join me in sending a clear message that carrying a gun is not acceptable, and crucially it puts you in more danger not less.
“I would like to reassure the public that gun crime remains a rare occurrence – these recent deaths being the first in the West Midlands since 2013. Nevertheless each death is a tragedy and cause for concern. We will be redoubling our efforts to protect the public from harm following these incidents.”
