A campaign is getting underway in Coventry aimed at tackling violence
Led by the West Midlands Violence Reduction Unit the ‘10 Days of Peace’ campaign will bring together young people, communities, and partner organisations from the education sector, to amplify local stories and messaging around what peace means to the people of Coventry.
It aims to celebrate the existing efforts of the community towards safeguarding our children and young people, as well as to act as a catalyst for further work and activity aimed at reducing violence.
The Violence Reduction Unit is a partnership organisation that aims to reduce violent crime across the West Midlands region. It benefits from the expertise of partners in public health, criminal justice, sports, education, and policing so everyone works together to prevent violence.
The VRU will be actively sharing content from the community on their social media channels (@WestMidsVRU on Facebook and Twitter). The campaign will introduce the #PassthePeace which encourages the local people of Coventry to share a video, photo or written post using the hashtag to share what peace means to them.
Kate Hills, WATCH Project Coordinator for the #OurHillfields Community Champions scheme, said: “Hillz FM and the W.A.T.C.H centre hope that by promoting the campaign that people will think about living and working in a more peaceful and safer environment and how by working together we can achieve that.”
Judith Staff, Director at Childhood Counts CIC said: “Peace, can be difficult for children in early years to understand. This week, we are talking about words that are similar to peace – including soft, gentle, quiet, and that peace is the opposite of being hurt. The children are learning peace is people feeling safe from harm.”
Commenting on the campaign, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner, David Jamieson said:
“Our work in Coventry builds on the efforts of those in the community that are passionate about safeguarding our children and young people.
“We have worked with key partners to better understand how we can help those communities most affected by violence.
“The 10 Days of Peace campaign amplifies the voices of these partners and members of the community that are actively making Coventry a safer and better place to live. We hope to celebrate and strengthen compassion within this diverse and vibrant community.”
The 10 Days of Peace campaign will run from 12th – 21st March.
